Outside Andrew Callaghan’s Channel 5 show in Denver, a local filmmaker is starting a company for the city’s underground scene. He meets the We Them Media bounty programme, and the two pitches talk to each other for four minutes.
The programme is explained as a proof of concept: what if Callaghan could pay for primary sources in a city he is not in, “I’ll give $100 to my favorite content and I’ll pick as many as I want for my video.” So far: “We have people submit from Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, and in India so far like the last like three weeks.”
Paul, the filmmaker, has been shooting DJs, a High Times event, a three-day writing camp, and is moving toward “finding different subcultures in and around Denver and Colorado,” starting with a family whose food truck is opening its first physical location. Neither of them is from here; both are from Pennsylvania. The interviewer’s own Denver story comes out in passing: a crypto conference five weeks ago, a car that broke down, and a hole he climbed out of by making videos, “I’ve been getting people around the world to try and do my fucking weekly bounties.”
The last minute is a piece to camera outside a sold-out show. “This is definitely a case study in independent media and journalism That’s what Channel 5 is,” and the ticket count he watched fall from four hundred to under a hundred over two days. Filmed by Maceo.
